2016 ROYAL QLD SHOW CANINE EXHIBITION

undefined

Dear Exhibitor

The RNA is delighted to announce a new Australian first judging system will be in place for the 2016 Royal Queensland Show Canine Competition.

This revoluntionery system means dogs will be judged in their group on one day using two international judges.

The group specials will be judged at the end of each day with Best in Group, Runner-Up, Puppy, Baby and Neuter to come back on the last Saturday for General Specials.

The obedience classes will be held over two afternoons while Dances with Dogs, Rally Obedience and Agility will all be held on the last day of show.

This is a first for the Royal Shows in Australia and reinforces our commitment to making the Ekka the most exhibitor friendly event by streamlining the competition.

It also ensures that exhibitors can plan ahead knowing that all group judging will take place in a single day, unlike previous years where the group judging has been split across several days.

The Specialty Show this year will focus on the Toy Breeds in Group 1 and will be held on Friday 12 August 2016.

We have taken on board your suggestions from this year’s show and are working towards making sure the Ekka offers the best show experience for our exhibitors and their canines.

For the first time we are also able to release the schedule complete with information on the judges and the timetable before Christmas.

Please note the regulations will be added to the schedule once entries open in April 2016.

To view the schedule please CLICK HERE.

If you or your breed club is interested in sponsoring a class or group, please visit the website to register your interest: CLICK HERE.

If you have any queries please feel free to contact our Competitions and Events Co-Ordinator Kelly Barnett: entries@royalqueenslandshow.com.au.

On behalf of the RNA Canine Committee, we wish all our exhibitors and their families a Merry Christmas and very happy New Year.

Sincerely

Lionel Blumel
Councillor in Charge.

STRATEGIC PLAN UPDATE

In 2015, Dogs Queensland established a Strategic Business Plan to map a pathway of the organisation over a five year period towards a desired future state. The plan was developed in consultation with a large number of interested Dogs Queensland members.

It is important that this document is a “living document” and includes a consistent review and reporting cycle. The report (link below) documents the progress of the Strategic Business Plan up to a reporting date of 30 September 2015. The Strategic Planning Committee are adopting a quarterly reporting program to keep members informed and engaged with the process and progress of strategic priorities. The next report will be for the quarter ended 31 December 2015 and will be released to members in January 2016.

The report is structured to provide an “update at a glance” for members as well as detailed information in the appendices for members who wish to obtain further information. The Overview section of the update report provides some relevant context relating to the Strategic Plan.

Over time, the planning and reporting process and format will be reviewed and improved and constructive feedback is welcome.

Should members have any questions in relation to the report or strategic planning, they are welcome to direct these to Craig Pettett (email to craig.pettett1@bigpond.com is the most effective method) or can be lodged to the office who will pass on to Craig for response.

Please CLICK HERE to download a copy of the Strategic Plan Update document.

COMMUNICATION RE JUNIOR HANDLER WORKSHOP - INGHAM

Dogs Queensland is pleased to announce that in place of the Junior Handlers event scheduled at Ingham this weekend, Ian Rasmussen has kindly offered his time to travel to Ingham and conduct a Junior Handlers workshop.

The workshop will commence at 9:00am on Sunday 4 October and all junior handlers are asked to be present by 8:45am so that the workshop can start promptly at 9:00am.

Ian is the Chair of the Dogs Queensland Junior Handler Committee, is a very skilful and successful handler and an excellent instructor and mentor. This is a wonderful opportunity for junior handlers to develop and learn and Dogs Queensland cannot thank Ian enough for offering to facilitate this.

This initiative aligns with the Board of Directors' decision to look after the welfare and enjoyment of our juniors in Zone 3 by providing workshops and development opportunities in lieu of the competitive classes.

Dogs Queensland asks that all junior handlers intending to participate, please register with the Show Manager, Craig Pettett by no later than the end of the Championship Show on Saturday 3 October so that the session can be planned appropriately for the number of participants.

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE REGARDING ZONE 3 JUNIOR HANDLERS COMPETITIONS

Due to the recent comments made on Facebook, I am providing the following statement to ease any confusion and circulation of rumours around the recent decision of the Dogs Queensland Board to cancel the Junior Handler competition scheduled for this weekend in Ingham and defer all future Junior Handler Competitions within Zone 3 until further notice. Note that an email was forwarded to all Zone 3 members yesterday afternoon and this is detailed below at the end of this message.

The decision made by the Board was not taken lightly by any Director. Comments that we are punishing the children for the actions of certain adults is simply untrue. Dogs Queensland was forced to act on the situation in Zone 3 due to the continued reports and complaints being made about the behaviour of certain exhibitors, particularly surrounding Junior Handler events. The Board has heard reports of children leaving the ring in tears due to the conduct of their parents outside the ring, children being verbally abused by adult exhibitors whilst showing and children having to calm their parents down after they reacted to another child winning a Junior Handlers event. This is just a few of the situations that we have had to hear about and are currently in the process of dealing with. Sadly, there are more.

As Dogs Queensland strongly supports Junior Handlers across this country, we made the decision to cancel the events in Zone 3 for the protection of our children. No child should be subjected to the inappropriate and unsportsmanlike behaviour that has been demonstrated by some exhibitors in the region. Instead, the Board has suggested that Junior Handler workshops be conducted, for the time being, to remove the competitive nature of the Junior Handlers events and keep our children away from the types of situations they have recently been forced to witness. Our children are our future and it is our intention to protect that future at all costs.

Some people have made comments asking why we don’t just take action against the offending adults. Dogs Queensland is currently in the process of investigating a number of the involved parties and is also reviewing and gathering evidence in relation to complaints that have been submitted to the office. These processes take time and it was decided that the protection of Junior Handlers needed to come swiftly and not be something that waited pending the outcome of our investigations or complaints process. Inappropriate behaviour will not be tolerated, however the complaints must be investigated thoroughly and the correct processes followed.

I hope this clarifies the position of the Board and that people can understand why we have reached the decision we have. Whilst it may seem harsh or extreme to some people, the protection of our children was deemed to be the most important factor of consideration.

Kind Regards,
Shane Thomas
President

MESSAGE FROM THE BOARD FOR ZONE 3 MEMBERS

During the last 2 months, the Dogs Queensland Board has received no fewer than 5 separate Show Manager's Reports detailing incidents that have occurred at various Zone 3 Conformation Shows.

Some of the incidents noted are;

·        Unacceptable behaviour towards Show Officials,
·        Unacceptable behaviour towards other Exhibitors,
·        Unacceptable remarks on Social Media towards Show Officials,
·        Unacceptable remarks on Social Media towards Exhibitors.

Of particular concern is reported undesirable behaviour, comments and Social Media activity that has impacted on our young members in relation to all Junior Handler competitions.

The Board has been left with no other alternative than to act on these reports and as a result has cancelled the Junior Handler Competition scheduled this weekend, Sunday 4 October at the Grounds Committee of Dogs Queensland Amenities - Zone 3 Shows at the Ingham Showgrounds. In addition to this, there will be no further Junior Handler Competitions or Classes at Zone 3 Shows until further notice.

If these ongoing incidents do not cease, the Board will consider further action including denial of further Junior Handler Competitions and Classes in 2016 and potential cancellation of Conformation Shows.

Lastly, whilst the Board is empathetic to the smaller size of Conformation Shows in Zone 3, exhibitors simply have to come forward to assist at Shows. OPEN SHOW EXHIBITORS + REVISION OF OPEN SHOW CHARGES

Open Show Exhibitors

The Conformation Judges Committee wishes to advise exhibitors that for a trial period of twelve months from 1 August 2015, no Group coordinators will exhibit at All Breed Open Shows in the Group in which they are the coordinator.

This, of course excludes Breed Specialty Shows (members of the Conformation Judges Committee do not exhibit at All Breed Open Shows).

At the end of the twelve month period, if there has not been a marked increase in the entries at All Breed Open shows, this trial will not be continued.

Revision of Open Show Charges

At the Presidents, Secretaries & Treasurers' Meeting in July this year, the Board agreed to investigate all fees paid by Clubs in relation to Open Shows to try to assist them to make them more viable. The Board, along with the Conformation Judges Committee, recognise that Open Shows are by far and away the most effective tool by which to effectively train Queensland Judges.

In recognition of this, the Board has agreed that all fees associated with Open Shows, i.e. Advertising and Ground Levy, will cease for all Open Shows conducted after 1 January 2016. It is noted however that all relevant paperwork from the Shows should still be submitted post Show, i.e. R10, Show Manager’s Report and Marked Catalogue.

It is hoped that this will assist all Clubs in ensuring that Open Shows continue in Queensland and our Judges receive the best possible training.

ONLINE SCHEDULE LODGEMENT - REMINDER

Dear Conformation Club / Committee

I have been working with Jeremy Cook from Showmanager (http://www.showmanager.com.au/) in regards to streamlining our Show Schedule lodgement process.

What we are hoping to achieve is to allow Clubs to enter all their own details online. This online information can be downloaded and utilised by the Office to help us produce the Schedule section of the Magazine in a more time efficient and accurate manner. The information is pulled into a Show Schedule document that can be emailed or lodged as a hard copy to marry up with all the Judge’s Contracts for approval by the Board.

Showmanager has produced a video and manual to explain how this works. This would initially be for Conformation Shows but then expanded to all QDS and RAFT disciplines, this is available for all Conformation Shows. There is a link from the Dogs Queensland Website but below is the direct link;

https://showmanager.com.au/Help/HowToCreateEventSchedule

If you have any queries in regards to this initiative please contact Showmanager on help@showmanager.com.au or myself on rob@dogsqueensland.org.au.

CODES OF PRACTICE - MEMBERS & BREEDERS

Two Code of Practice documents have been prepared by our Government and Agency Liaison Officer, Mr Mark Sheppard, together with input from the Board and the Canine Health Committee.

With reference to our previous email sent on 24 August 2015 about the Puppy Farm Strategy, Dogs Queensland wishes to thank all those members who were able to reply to the Government Survey.

Dogs Queensland does not agree that our members should be expected to participate in a Government imposed scheme, which in many ways duplicates exactly what our responsible member breeders are already doing.

In order to reinforce Dogs Queensland's standing with Government, the following documents have been prepared. It is understood that the detail within these documents are the minimum requirements and the vast majority of breeders already have most of the measures in place.

Please note within the documents the difference between a Standard and a Guideline as contained within the codes as such:

Standards are enforceable - because they have been taken directly from existing state legislation, local laws, Dogs Queensland Rules and our own Code of Ethics.

Guidelines are not enforceable - they are simply suggestions / strategies which will assist members to achieve and exceed compliance with the expected Standards.

Members and breeders should note that for 2016 and beyond, renewal forms will have provisions included where a box must be ticked stating that you agree to abide by these Codes of Practice.

Prior to 2016 renewals being sent out, if any member wishes to provide any feedback regarding anything within these documents, please do so by email direct to me by close of business on Wednesday 23 September 2015: rob@dogsqueensland.org.au.

CAMPING POLICY AMENDED

The Board of Directors has recently approved amendments to the Camping Policy as follows within point 1:

Current Wording

Note – Each allocated site allows for 6 people, 1 Tent / Gazebo, 1 Trailer and 1 Vehicle up to a maximum of 1.5 tonnes.  Please refer to the diagram at the top of the next page that shows the 20 Tent Camping sites available and their locations.

Approved Amendments to Wording

Note – In line with the advice provided by Brisbane City Council (BCC), Dogs Queensland is required to submit an application and obtain approval for "Material Change of Use" to enable camping at the Durack grounds. At this point of the process, Dogs Queensland has obtained a permit for tent camping only. Each allocated site allows for a maximum of six (6) people, one (1) vehicle and (1) trailer.

A vehicle is defined as a passenger car, people mover, 4WD, or van and does not include motorised accommodation such as a motorhome, bus or campervan. A trailer is defined as a trailer for the purpose of moving and accommodating dogs and does not include mobile accommodation such as caravans, however a camper-trailer with fold out tent accommodation does meet the permit requirements for tent camping and can be used. Dog trailers with accommodation facilities such as caravans set up with dog pens are outside the limitations of the tent camping permit and cannot be used.

The CCC(Q) reserves the right to determine the eligibility of any vehicle or trailer and where there is uncertainty of eligibility in accordance with this policy, the situation should be referred to CCC(Q) for clarification prior to booking. Accommodation must be a Tent/s and/or Gazebo/s sufficient for accommodation of the occupants of the site (Gazebos and Shade Structures may be erected over trailers for the comfort of dogs in addition to those for the accommodation of persons). Sites are occupied at the user’s own risk.

Please refer to the diagram at the top of the next page that shows the 19 Tent Camping sites available and their locations. These requirements have been developed to ensure that Dogs Queensland complies with the terms of the current permit issued by BCC. Any camping arrangements which do not comply with permit requirements are likely to result in compliance notices/fines, limit the opportunity for Dogs Queensland to expand the existing permit to open up more sites to cater for a greater variety of accommodation types and may result in cancellation of the existing permit.

Please CLICK HERE to view the updated Camping Policy including the above amendments.

SPECIAL GENERAL MEETING 14 SEPTEMBER CANCELLED

I refer to my email to Members dated 21 August 2015 in regards to the Special General Meeting (SGM) scheduled for 14 September 2015.

The SGM was called under Clause 49.1(2) of the CCC(Q) Ltd Constitution;

49 Special General Meetings

49.1 The Secretary must call a Special General Meeting (SGM) upon:

(1) being directed to call the meeting by the Board; or

(2) being given a written request signed by one hundred (100) members of the CCCQ Ltd.

The two items of Business scheduled for the Special General Meeting were a Special Resolution to amend the Constitution and a Vote of No Confidence in Director Lionel Blumel.

I wish to advise that two further Petitions have been lodged with the Dogs Queensland Office yesterday withdrawing signatures from each Petition, consequently the number of signatures is reduced to this;

Petition 1 – Special Resolution to amend the Constitution

95 Valid Signatures

Petition 2 – Vote of No Confidence in Director Lionel Blumel

97 Valid Signatures

Therefore, with the legal advice that I have been given, both original Petitions are now invalid and as a result under the terms of the CCC(Q) Ltd Constitution, we are no longer obligated to hold the SGM on Monday 14th September and the Meeting is cancelled.

OBEDIENCE TITLES (CCD/CD) + DOGS QLD YOUTUBE + OPEN SHOW SPECTACULAR

Obedience Titles (CCD/CD)

There has been some confusion recently regarding the removal of CCD from a dog's Title list when a CD Title has been achieved.

It has been confirmed at the recent National Obedience Committee meeting that when a CD Title is gained, CCD is removed from the Title list of that dog.

The current "Rules for the conduct of Obedience Trials" document, last updated in 2010, which is displayed on the ANKC Ltd website, states the following in Section 2 on Page 6:

Only the Highest Obedience Title awarded to the dog will be used after the name of the dog.

Dogs Qld YouTube

Dogs Queensland continues to promote the YouTube channel that exists, where videos are placed of certain events and items.

Of particular note, the recent Junior Handlers State Title day as well the Best In Show judging from the All Dogs Sports Spectacular were both video'd and these are able to be viewed on that site.

Open Show Spectacular

Dogs Queensland would like to remind members to enter this year's Open Show Spectacular being held at Durack on 24 October 2015. Please CLICK HERE to view the flyer that appears in the September Dog World magazine.

REMINDER - QLD PUPPY FARM STRATEGY GOVT SURVEY

Please refer to the email below sent to members on 24 August at 5:00pm. You are reminded that the Queensland Government Survey closes on 6 September so for you to have your say, please ensure you respond as per below by the closing date and time:

Dogs Queensland believes it is vital for our members to participate in the recently released Puppy Farm Survey prepared by the Queensland Government.

Please refer to the Puppy Farm Strategy below for the history behind this subject as prepared by our Government & Agency Liaison Officer, Mr Mark Sheppard and the reasons as many responses as possible are required.

The link is here for the SURVEY, however before you complete it, please CLICK HERE to view how Dogs Queensland's response might look and would ask that you do so in a similar fashion, however please ensure you use your own words - the ones used are just meant as a guide for you.

Written submissions can be placed by mail or email to:

Please contact Rob Harrison on rob@dogsqueensland.org.au if you have any questions or need for further clarification about what you are being asked to do.

PUPPY FARM STRATEGY:

The issue of how to better manage and monitor the activities of unscrupulous puppy farmers in Queensland is not new – in fact Dogs Queensland attended the very first stakeholder meeting convened by the Government of the day back in November 2010. Research into a better way to monitor the activities of all non aligned dog breeders (breeders who were not members of Dogs Queensland) continued for a further 14 months with a total of 11 stakeholder meetings being held during this period. Members may recall that in early March 2012 a request was sent to all by our then President Mrs Ulla Greenwood. In that communication former President Greenwood asked members to complete an online survey being conducted by Biosecurity Queensland. The survey was designed to ascertain how Queenslanders felt about proposed legislative changes that would closely scrutinise the cruel practice of Puppy Farming.

Unfortunately the results of that survey were never published – history records that the former Bligh Labor Government was overturned by the LNP under the leadership of Premier Campbell Newman. During the three years of LNP Governance that followed there was no progress made with the concept of monitoring Puppy Farmers - however this has once again changed. In late January of this year Queensland Labor was given a mandate to Govern and as a result the Puppy Farm Reform Strategy is very much back on the agenda.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk backed tighter control of puppy farmers by making the issue one of her pre election policies. This came as no surprise to the Directors of Dogs Queensland because throughout the period covering mid 2012 to January 2015 we did not remain idle on the subject of puppy farming – very close contact was maintained with former Primary Industries Minister Tim Mulherin and some of the key decision makers within Biosecurity Queensland.

Recently Biosecurity Queensland developed a new online survey designed to check whether Queenslanders had changed their thinking about how to manage puppy farms – the survey closes on Sunday 6th September 2015 and members are requested to once again complete this survey. It is vitally important that a strong message is sent to Biosecurity Queensland which reinforces the Dogs Queensland as the peak industry body for canine affairs in this State. Dogs Queensland have an extensive set of enforceable rules and a Code of Ethics which dictates how our member breeders manage their breeding programmes.

Dogs Queensland does not agree that our members should be expected to participate in a Government imposed scheme which in many ways duplicates exactly what our responsible member breeders are already doing. We have developed an example of how members may wish to complete the survey. We encourage you to respond in your own words rather than simply copy the examples provided. Your support now will ensure that our Dogs Queensland position is clearly understood by Government decision makers when the time comes to develop new legislation.

Have your say NOW and submit your feedback by close of business 6 September 2015.

33.6 If seventy five percent (75%) of members present at a Special General Meeting determine that a Director ought to be removed, then the Board of Directors member ceases forthwith to be a member of the Board of Directors.

33.7 A Director of the Board of Directors has no right of appeal against his removal at a Special General Meeting but may stand at the next election if otherwise eligible.

Item 1 – Special Resolution to amend the Constitution (Petition available below)

We, the undersigned members of CCCQ Ltd, request that Mr Rob Harrison, the Secretary of CCCQ Ltd call a Special General Meeting for the purpose of the members of CCCQ Ltd to elect the President and Vice Presidents of CCCQ Ltd rather than the current position requiring the Board to elect the President and Vice Presidents.

The vote for President, Snr Vice President and Jnr Vice President by the members should commence at the next Election of Board Directors to coincide with those elections.

Should the members vote to elect their own President, Senior Vice President and Junior Vice President? And win this vote; I then also submit the following as a guide to be used in this process.

(1) By the deletion of the existing clause 28.3 and the insertion of the following clause in its stead:

(a)        At the next AGM, members of CCCQ Limited present in persons or by proxy shall elect one President and two Vice-Presidents from the members of the Board. The President and Vice-Presidents elected at that and subsequent relevant AGMs shall be elected for a term of two (2) years.

(b)        The retiring President and Vice-Presidents may offer themselves for re-election upon expiry of their terms.'

(c)        Voting shall take place on the basis of 'first past the post'. In the case of the election of the Vice-Presidents, persons eligible to vote will be entitled to cast votes for up to two (2) candidates and the two (2) candidates with the highest number of votes will be elected. A tie in votes for any position will be determined by the drawing of lots. Any position not filled will be treated as a casual vacancy.

Item 2 – Vote of No Confidence in Director Lionel Blumel (Petition available below)

We, the undersigned members of CCCQ Ltd, request that Mr Rob Harrison, the Secretary of CCCQ Ltd call a Special General Meeting for the purpose of the members of CCCQ Ltd to put a Vote of No Confidence in Director Lionel Blumel.

Note 1: All Financial Members are entitled to attend the SGM and vote at the SGM. Any renewing Members from 2014 who are yet to pay their 2015 Renewal Fees may only attend the SGM but may not vote at the SGM.

Note 2: All Financial Members unable to attend have the right to appoint a proxy in accordance with Clauses 55 – 59 of the CCC(Q) Ltd Constitution; this Proxy Form is available from the Dogs Queensland Website.

For an appointment of a proxy for a meeting of the CCC(Q) Ltd’s members to be effective, the following documents must be received by the Secretary at least forty eight (48) hours before the meeting;

(1)     the proxy’s appointment; and

(2)     if the appointment is signed or otherwise authenticated by the appointer’s attorney, the authority under which the appointment was signed or authenticated or a certified copy of the authority.

CAMPING AT THE DURACK DOGS QUEENSLAND SPORTS GROUNDS

I refer you to a notice that has been received by the Dogs Queensland Office from the Brisbane City Council, the contents of which I ask you to take note of. Please CLICK HERE to view the notice.

I further refer you to an email sent from Dogs Queensland on 5th June in regards to Camping at the Dogs Queensland Sports Grounds at Durack (the Showgrounds) and especially clause 4 of that email that I reproduce below;

4. Members who choose to tent camp outside of the designated area, or to camp in a vehicle will do so at their own risk and Dogs Queensland will not be liable for any loss suffered by those members. Additionally, as this will be in breach of the BCC camping approval granted to Dogs Queensland, members who do so may put Dogs Queensland at risk of losing its current BCC approval and jeopardise future applications for BCC camping approvals.

Due to the actions of Members in ignoring the above direction, Dogs Queensland is now at a real risk of losing its current approval and jeopardising any future applications for approval for Caravans, Campervans, Winnebago's, etc.

Consequently, Dogs Queensland has been left with very little alternative but to advise all Members that anyone arriving at the Showgrounds this weekend with an intention to Camp in anything other than a Tent in a pre-booked Camping Site will be turned away at the Gate. Similarly, at the conclusion of the Shows on Saturday and Sunday, anyone with an intention to Camp in anything other than a Tent in a pre-booked Camping Site will be asked to leave the Grounds. Consequently, anyone with a pre-booked Tent Camping Site should have their printed permit with them at all times. It is likely at this stage that a Security Guard will be employed to ensure these directions are complied with.

Tent Camping Sites are still available for this weekend, all bookings are to be made through the ‘Show Manager’ website, showmanager.com.au and we thank them greatly for their assistance in developing this booking system.

Please familiarise yourself with the following documents (click on each one to view):

ALL DOGS SPORTS SPECTACULAR - CLUB STALLS + ART COMPETITION + CHEQUE PAYMENTS

Club Stalls

On 23 August 2015, Dogs Queensland is holding the third All Dogs Sports Spectacular at the Dogs Queensland Sports Grounds, King Ave, Durack. This day of dog sports will be exciting for both exhibitors and members of the Public with a Conformation Championship Show; Agility, Obedience and Rally-O Trials plus demonstrations including Dances with Dogs, Flyball, Lure Coursing, Canine Disc (Frisbee), Weight-pulling and others. There will also be static displays by groups such as Guide Dogs Queensland, Greyhound Adoption Program, Queensland Sighthound Association and Association of Pet Dog Trainers.

This event is being promoted by the Magazine, PR & Media Committee using many mediums, including radio, to encourage members of the public to attend and view the events. We are hoping that this event will help promote all dog breeds and the activities that people can enjoy with their dogs, whether pedigree or not.

This message is to invite Breed Clubs and those members who own breeds without a Dogs Queensland Affiliated Club, to create a static display / stall and so promote their Breed and/or Club. This will be the ideal time to involve the public first-hand in any and all disciplines. Stalls will be grouped in particular areas and must be 'manned' for the duration of the event.

The All Dogs Sports Spectacular Committee would like to hear from Clubs or groups of individuals that are interested in participating and ask them to nominate the amount of room they would prefer to have - e.g. 3m x 3m (single gazebo size) or 6m x 3m (double gazebo). The Club or group needs to provide their own gazebo. Prizes are on offer for 1st, 2nd and 3rd best presented Breed / Club stand.

IMPORTANT MESSAGE TO CANINE EXHIBITORS

Improved accessibility and convenience announced today

Dear Exhibitors

Following feedback from our valued exhibitors, the RNA is today implementing the following changes to provide a more practical and streamlined process for the 2015 Royal Queensland Show Championship Canine Competition.

We are aware of exhibitor concerns regarding the new location for the competition, parking and vehicle access permits. The RNA understands these concerns and is committed to providing exhibitors with improvements which ensure greater convienence and accessibility.

We understand the competition shift from the Plaza to Animal Boulveard has raised some concerns. The reason the canine competition has been moved is due to the ongoing Brisbane Showgrounds Regeneration Project. Since the commencement of the 15 year regeneration project in 2010, some competitions and exhibits have been relocated to accommodate construction. We are grateful for the understanding and patience of our exhibitors as this once in a century project transforms our iconic showgrounds precinct – and ensures the Ekka continues to be held on this site for another 140 years.

The new location does provide greatly improved drop off and pick up points. Exhibitors can drive into Gate 2a from St Pauls Terrace, drop off or pick up, and then exit back onto St Pauls Terrace.

We hope the following changes - which have been implemented today - address these concerns and we will continue to work closely with exhibitors to ensure any issue raised is resolved. As such, from today, the following measures have been put in place:

VEHICLE ACCESS PERMITS - From today, canine exhibitors will no longer need to apply for a vehicle access permit. This is to ensure exhibitors can drop off and pick up their animals between 6am and 9pm each day of show at Gate 2a. For those who have already applied for a vehicle access permit please be advised you will no longer need to display this. The RNA has made this change to ensure exhibitors are able to drop off and pick up at their convienence.

MORE PARKING OPTIONS – There is a number of other parking options available for those exhibitors who do not wish to access Ballymore Stadium. These are:

• Wilson Parking, Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital, Cnr Herston Rd & Gilchrist Ave, Herston
• Metro Parking, Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital, 20 Butterfield St, Herston
• Secure Parking, Valley Metro, Alfred St, Fortitude Valley
• Secure Parking, McWhirters, Warner and Ballow Sts, Fortitude Valley
• Secure Parking, 55 Little Edward St, Spring Hill (entry via Hope St)
• Victoria Park Sportsground, entry via Gilchrist Ave, Herston

Ballymore parking: As you are aware the RNA has arranged parking at Ballymore Staduim in Herston this year with shuttle buses operating from 6am to 10pm daily. Buses will run continuously between Gate 2a, the entrance closest to the new Canine Pavilion on St Paul's Terrace and Gate 5a on O'Connell Terrace to Ballymore and return. Exhibitors can drive into Gate 2a from St Pauls Terrace, drop off or pick up, and then exit back onto St Pauls Terrace. Exhibitors can park at Ballymore for $30 per car per day while a car and trailer will cost $50 per day with security onsite at all times. Further details for online booking and pre-payment will be sent out shortly.

Fortitude Valley State School parking: In previous years, exhibitors have been able to park at Fortitude Valley State School. Unfortunately, due to circumstances outside our control, the site may not be available this year due to government infrastructure works. The RNA remains committed to securing this parking for our valued exhibitors however it is dependent on availability and access as decided by the Queensland Government.

IMPROVED BENCHING / SEATING AND EXTRA SPACE:

The RNA has ensured the new location for the canine competiton - Animal Boulevard (Buildings 10, 11 and Expo Place 2- Building 13) in Alexandria Street - offers a larger space than last year. Improvements have also been made to the benching areas giving exhibitors and their animals extra room for grooming and belongings to provide greater comfort. In the past few years seating has been at capacity and as such the RNA has introduced extra grandstand seating this year to ensure more people can come and enjoy the competition.

ENTRIES WILL NOW CLOSE FRIDAY JUNE 19 AT 5PM:

Considering the improvements announced today to the competition, the RNA is extending the competition closing date to next Friday to ensure all exhibitors have ample time to enter.

DURACK SPORTS GROUNDS CAMPING POLICY

You may be aware that Dogs Queensland currently allows its members to camp at the Durack Dogs Queensland Sports Grounds (the Showgrounds). We are happy to provide this service to our members as we feel that it helps to strengthen the sense of community among members by helping to build lasting friendships as well as adding to the overall enjoyment that our members experience, particularly during show days.

Dogs Queensland has been granted a limited approval from the Brisbane City Council (BCC) to allow camping at the Showgrounds. Further details of the BCC-issued camping approval and the requirements that must be complied with by members who choose to camp at the Showgrounds can be found in the Dogs Queensland Tent Camping Policy and Guidelines (Camping Policy). Please CLICK HERE to view a copy of the Camping Policy.

While we encourage our members to camp at the Showgrounds, we require that members wishing to do so understand the following:

1. The BCC camping approval granted to Dogs Queensland only allows for a maximum of 20 designated camping sites at the Showgrounds. We are unable to accommodate any additional camping sites at the Showgrounds and we therefore advise members wishing to camp to book early to secure your spot.

2. Members wishing to camp at the Showgrounds must do so within the designated camping area advised by Dogs Queensland and as set out in the Camping Policy.

3. Dogs Queensland is currently only able to offer tent camping to its members. Under the terms of the BCC camping approval, we are unable by law to allow any vehicle camping (such as Caravans, Camper Vans, Winnebagos etc.) at the Showgrounds. We apologise for any inconvenience that this may cause. Dogs Queensland will make a further statement after the July Board Meeting in regards to the potential next stage and further development of the camping area.

We encourage all members considering camping at Durack in future to read the Camping Policy and to contact us if you have any questions.

On behalf of Dogs Queensland, I would like to extend my appreciation for your understanding and cooperation.

MEMBERS EDUCATION PROGRAM UPDATE + PINE RIVERS RALLY-O TRIAL 20 JUNE INFO UPDATE + SAMFORD AG 11 JULY INFO UPDATE

Members Education Program Update

The following information is provided to clarify any confusion regarding the date for the next workshop:

It is understood that there has been some confusion regarding some of the dates of the Members Education Program workshops. At the last workshop, it was stated that workshops are generally all held on the second Monday of each month as it is the only night that does not clash with Breed Lectures and Board meetings.

However, this month it is to be held on the third Monday of the month due to the long weekend.

For all members who have registered for these workshops, you are reminded that for the above reasons, Module 4 will be held on Monday 15 June.

Pine Rivers Rally-O Trial 20 June Info Update

The Pine Rivers Dog Training Club Inc are holding their Obedience and Rally-O Trials at Rob Akers Reserve, Bells Pocket Rd, Strathpine on Saturday 20 June.

Please note that for the Rally-O Trial, this is a single Trial with two Judges, not a double Trial. Mrs C Fisher (QLD) will be judging Novice, Advanced A and Advanced B and Mrs T Knox (NSW) will be judging Excellent A and Excellent B.

The Obedience Trial Judges are as per the Schedule in the April Dog World magazine.

Samford Ag 11 July Info Update

Please note the following for the Samford & District Show Society Championship Show being held at Showground Dr, Highvale on Saturday 11 July:

The Schedule on Page 41 of the July Dog World magazine stated that there were No Challenges for German Shepherds, Dobermanns, Rottweilers, Dachshunds or Cavalier King Charles Spaniels.

It has been decided that in fact there will be Challenges for the abovementioned breeds.

RNA UPDATE RE PARKING FOR THE EKKA

A copy of an email is shown below that has been sent to exhibitors from the RNA in relation to parking at this year's Ekka.

Dogs Queensland would first like to point out to our members that there are many positive points for the 2015 Ekka and a few are listed here:

  • The drop off and pick up area this year will only be used by Dog Exhibitors and it will hold a good number of exhibitors' vehicles and trailers alike for unloading..

  • The shuttle buses are free and have the dog drop area as their main priority, to get the exhibitors back from the car parking area in a timely manner.

  • The RNA Honorary Stewards this year will be managing exhibitors who have been judged first on the day to ensure they leave earlier. This will overcome the afternoon rush of everyone leaving at the same time.

  • The bench areas will be set out better for the exhibitors and will be managed by Dogs Queensland from our stand, which is very close by.

  • The ring area will be inside, under lights and have a grass surface (similar to last year), plus there will be more grandstand seating for everyone to view the judging.

  • Also, near the "Advance" stand, there will be a number of small tables and chairs which will have good views of the judging rings.

SPECIAL MESSAGE TO CANINE EXHIBITORS

Parking update for 2015 Royal Queensland Show

Dear Exhibitor

Parking arrangements for canine exhibitors to this year’s Royal Queensland Show have been finalised at Ballymore Stadium in neighbouring Herston. Located just 2.8 kilometres from the Brisbane Showgrounds, this new parking facility will offer exhibitors convenience with FREE shuttle buses operating from 6am to 10pm daily.

As you would be aware the Canine Competition will relocate to Animal Boulevard (Buildings 10, 11 and Expo Place 2- Building 13) in Alexandria Street this year. For the past two years, the canine show rings were housed on the Plaza while the benching areas were located on the ground floor of the Royal International Convention Centre (Royal ICC).

Buses will run continuously between Gate 2a, the entrance closest to the new Canine Pavilion on St Paul's Terrace and Gate 5a on O'Connell Terrace to Ballymore and return. Exhibitors can drive into Gate 2a from St Paul's Terrace, drop off or pick up, and then exit back through St Paul's Terrace. The new location also features larger enclosed space plus the convenience of an adjacent outdoor exercise area.

Exhibitors can park at Ballymore for $30 per car per day while a car and trailer will cost $50 per day with security onsite at all times. Further details for online booking and pre-payment will be sent out shortly.

In previous years, exhibitors have been able to park at Fortitude Valley State School. Unfortunately, due to circumstances outside our control, the site may not be available this year due to government infrastructure works. The RNA remains committed to securing this parking for our valued exhibitors however it is dependent on availability and access during construction times.

CLICK HERE for a special factsheet / map outlining the pick-up and drop-off points and further information.

Rules Amendments

In particular, please note the Definitions on Pages 1 and 2 for Assembly Steward, Ring Steward, Show Manager and Writer. The alterations to these definitions have been approved by the Board recently and are effective immediately.

Cardboard Sent With Titles/REREG's

Dogs Queensland have listened and understood our members when they have told us that there have been issues with Australia Post bending and/or folding the certificates when placing them into people's letterboxes, in particular the Titles.

We have therefore made changes whereby we will place some cardboard inside the envelope every time we send out a new certificate for all Titles and Reregistrations sent from the office.

We're hoping this will help alleviate some of those situations that require certificates being reprinted and reposted.

You will then receive another email confirming that your application has been sent for processing. Please note that this is not a confirmation that your Credit Card has been accepted.

At this point, if you are not a Judge or you are not renewing any further Memberships, e.g. a Prefix only Membership, you can simply Logout. If you are a Judge, you can now renew your Judge's Licence following a similar process to that above and clicking on the ‘JUDGES RENEWAL’ link.

DIRECTOR ELECTION RESULTS

In light of today's unfortunate turn of events regarding the Director Election Results, I felt that it was important to communicate with members.

As some members would be aware via social media sites, the Australian Electoral Commission (AEC) called the results of the election this morning and advised President Zimmerle, General Manager Harrison and two scrutineers of those results.

As a courtesy to all candidates prior to releasing results to the membership, each person was contacted advising of such.

The AEC contacted Mr Harrison at approximately 11:00am to advise there had been a systemic failure and they believed they had an incorrect total.

Mr Harrison immediately contacted each candidate to advise them of this and also contacted the scrutineers for them to return to the AEC office, along with himself and Mrs Zimmerle.

The AEC provided the final rechecked result at approximately 2:00pm and Mr Harrison immediately proceeded to contact each candidate again.

The names of the successful candidates were declared by the AEC as follows (in no particular order):

Barbara Murfet
Craig Pettett
Shane Thomas
Carolyn Pearen
Shaneen Bendixen
Timothy Thomas

Dogs Queensland has expressed its disappointment at this turn of events and has requested a statement from the AEC detailing the whole process and issues identified so that these can be shared with the membership.

The AEC has advised this will be available tomorrow. This will be released to members as a matter of urgency.

To assist Members in providing the most accurate and timely information, if anyone had any questions in regards to the financial accounts it was requested that those be submitted no later than 10 March 2015.

The items received were as follows;

LOCKYER VALLEY KENNEL CLUB

1.    Moving of Dogs Qld Office to our Grounds at Durack

This move is not as hard as we may think. Our current Office is not user friendly to us, particularly our Senior and disabled Members. The Meeting Rooms underneath the Function Room at Durack could easily be converted in a short time frame to become our new Dogs Qld Office, with phone lines put in so there is no disruptions to the day to day running of the Office and it could all be done in a matter of a month or two.

2.    Safety Officer

In this day and age this should be a requirement at every Show to implement safe practices for the protection of all members and their dogs.

3.    First Aid Officer

We should have a qualified First Aid Officer at each Show and to overcome this it could perhaps be a requirement for our Show Manager's to do a First Aid Course so on the day there is someone qualified for every Show, or a Member who may wish to donate their time to help.

4.    Pet Insurance

Why don't we have our own Pet Insurance? If the RSPCA and Woolworths for example can offer Pet Insurance to the general public, keeping in mind they have no actual members then why aren't we doing this. We have over 6000 members to which this could also expand into the general public to attract more people into joining. There is also a flow on effect where we could also offer this to our future puppy buyers like for example Pet Plan giving the first 6 weeks for free then the new owners pay if they wish to keep it going thus again generating more income for Dogs Qld, and it can be all underwritten by a big insurance company like for example Holland.

5.    Mentoring

We need a mentoring system to help show new exhibitors the ropes and to make them feel comfortable and learn how to Show as some find it daunting and give up. Several Members have offered to help new exhibitors.

6.    Formation of an In School Dog Education Program

We should be implementing a program where a group of volunteers go to Primary Schools with their dogs educating the kids on our purebred dogs and Dogs Qld as this can incorporate many things on general caring for the breed of dog etc but after the kids have seen the dogs and are so excited they go home to tell Mum and Dad about their experiences at School today and hand them the handouts on the breeds the kids were interested in and just maybe we might get some new Members out of it and then again not only lifting our profile out there in the public but get some new Members and hopefully when next Mum and Dad are looking for a dog they might ring us before going to the back yard Breeders and the cost is next to nothing as the people participating will be donating their time and experience. Upon consultation with some of Dogs Qld members on this issue many have said they would love the chance to do it. This not only gives Dogs Qld Members more avenues for puppy sales but the prospect of more exposure for the Purebred Dog World.

7.    Permit Breeders to hold Joint Prefixes' with people who they are acting as Mentors to

People who have bought a dog which is jointly registered with the breeder have been told by Dogs Qld that this is not permitted even though it has been noted that 2 Miniature Schnauzer breeders held a Joint Prefix. If Breeders are given no option but to sign complete ownership to a new owner, meaning that they can act without the wisdom of the Breeder and even on sell a dog to a third party against the Breeder’s wishes and in the end Breeders will choose not to sell dogs on the Main Register. If a partnership agreement has been completed between owners which clearly states the purpose of the dog and who pays for what why are they not allowed to hold a Prefix for that Partnership?

8.    Update from Liaison Officer

Can the Members request an all region update from the Liaison Officer with how the idea of progressing the 9 dog licence for breeders at Local Council level. We have many Members in areas still awaiting updates, of how discussions are progressing. Even if the Councils are unable to come to the table imminently with a commitment to the Breeders Licences, is there a window of opportunity to address registration fees for dogs (with most falling due from 1 July again) owned by DQ members, at a discounted rate.

9.    Covered Rings Update

Could you please include on AGM Agenda the costings of the covered rings to be tabled at the AGM.

MAREE KENNEL CLUB

10.    Position of Dogs Queensland Library

Can the Library be moved to a more user friendly position at Durack, so that it may be accessed more easily on show days by Trainee Judges, visiting Judges and Exhibitors alike. There are many good Books contained in the Library that are available to Trainees and Coordinators as well.

DACHSHUND CLUB OF QLD

11.    That the Committee Structure within Dogs Queensland be improved in the following manner:

(a)    that there be two strands (types) of Committees

         (i)    Standing (Permanent) Committees,
         (ii)    Working Committees (Parties)

(b)    that under the existing arrangement within Dogs Queensland the following Committees become Standing (Permanent) Committees. These Committees to operate on two year terms with membership being reviewed at the relevant AGM when Board of Director elections are held. Nominations for positions on these Committees to be called from the general membership and elections held at the AGM by those attending. Limit on numbers on each Committee to be determined by the Board of Directors.

         (i)    Finance Committee (New Committee)
         (ii)    PR & Media Committee
         (iii)    Conformation Judges Committee*
         (iv)    Durack (Grounds) Committee
         (v)    Retrieving & Field Trials Committee
         (vi)    Queensland Dog Sports Committee
(vii)    Canine Health & Breeder Accreditation Scheme Committee
         (viii)    Amenities Committee
         (ix)    Library and Archives Committee
         (x)    Event (Show) Managers & Stewards Committee*
         (xi)    Junior Handlers Committee

(c)    That the following become Working Committees (Parties) with the Board of Directors to establish additional Committees to facilitate specific projects as required. Nominations for membership of these Committees to be sought from the general membership. Limit on the number of members on these Committees to be decided upon by the Board of Directors.

         (i)    Dog of the Year Committee
         (ii)    Strategic Planning Implementation Committee
(iii)    Other “one off” Committees that are considered short term in operation

Note:  * Should consideration be given to combining these two Committees as they are very similar in the end result: i.e. training of “officials” for the various roles in the dog world.

12.    Durack Infrastructure Plan

The Dachshund Club requests the Board updates members on the present status of the Infrastructure Plan for the Durack Dog Sports Ground. The reason for this request is that while the subject has been listed for discussion at the Presidents, Secretary’s and Treasurers Meeting in July it is felt that there are many individual members of Dogs Queensland who are not members of clubs who are very interested in what the present situation is and they will not have the opportunity of being able to participate in the discussion. The Club also requests that a regular update on this subject be included in the “Dog World”.

13.    Greyhound Baiting

The Dachshund Club wishes to enquire as to the reasons Dogs Queensland did not publicly take a stand on the recent Greyhound troubles. Surely if DQ wishes to promote itself as the “voice” of the dog world then it stands to reason that it should have been one of the first organisations to put out a statement condemning the practice of live baiting.  Greyhounds are a respected breed recognized worldwide and surely deserve our full support.

POSTPONEMENTS: Durack Shows 21 & 22 Feb + Rockhampton Training 22 Feb

Durack

In light of the extreme weather conditions that have occurred so far in South East Queensland and will continue to occur for the next 24 - 48 hours, and with the safety of all Members uppermost in the Director’s minds, it has been agreed by the Board that all Shows and Events will be postponed at the Durack Grounds on Saturday 21 and Sunday 22 February.

On behalf of the Board, may I apologise for any inconvenience this may cause but in the light of the conditions, the Board was left with no choice but to make this decision.

The Board will liaise with the Clubs concerned and come to an agreement for the rescheduling of these Events in the coming weeks and members will be advised.

Rockhampton

Conditions in Rockhampton this weekend will also see the postponement of the training sessions that were to occur for Stewards and Writers on Sunday 22 February. These training sessions have been rescheduled to the next weekend and will now be held on Sunday 1 March, same location and times.

Again, apologies for the inconvenience but it is unavaoidable in the circumstances.

THE MONTH IN REVIEW - JANUARY 2015

To ensure Members are kept informed and up to date with what is happening within Dogs Queensland, the Board has decided that the office, in conjunction with the Board will be releasing a monthly publication titled “The Month in Review” by the way of email and the website.

I will start the ball rolling by bringing Members up to date on a few matters. Firstly, it is certainly not meant to be a secret that Dogs Queensland is assessing the issue of ‘Undercover Rings’ at Durack. This subject was first discussed at the Presidents, Secretaries and Treasurers’ (PST) Meeting in July 2014. Business plans, costings and options are to be brought back to the next PST meeting in July 2015, after which Members will be consulted on all options in regards to the project.

The assessment of a possible relocation of the Office is another Business plan with costings to be reviewed. This was discussed as part of the Strategic Planning process, as were many other matters. The adopted Strategic Plan will provide the organisation with clear direction and timelines on this and many other matters. The Board has now fully adopted the method of a business plan with full costings to be prepared on all matters of significance.

The Rules, after countless hours of review, are now in draft format for the Board and the relevant Committees to review and respond to. These draft Rules have taken into account Member Surveys in regards to Show Officials where it was noted that the majority of members wish to have the same Rules for all of Queensland as a united Dogs Queensland. All current ANKC Rules and of course the Dogs Queensland Constitution have been taken into consideration. After this initial Board/Committee review, Members will obviously be asked for their feedback.

The new Website is also nearing completion, again taking into account Member Surveys. The Website will have a brand new look and logical design, as well as increased functionality and will be smartphone/tablet compatible.

If members want more information regarding these issues or any Marketing or Government type issues, you are encouraged to review the Marketing and Government Liaison Reports in the Annual Report that will be published soon.

CORRECTION - ROYAL CANIN PRIZE COLLECTION

In reference to our email sent to you yesterday at 4:00pm regarding the Royal Canin Prize Collections, we would like to clarify the information provided.

November that was transferred from Durack at the last minute.

These were the Amenities and Dog of the Year Support Shows that were moved from Friday, Saturday & Sunday the 28th to 30th at Durack to Saturday 29th and Sunday 30th at the RNA showgrounds. Vouchers were issued and anybody holding vouchers that haven’t collected their prizes should do so on the January long weekend as previously stated.

Sincere apologies for any confusion caused. Please present your vouchers to John Hansen at Durack between 6:30pm and 7:30pm on Saturday 24 and Sunday 25 January 2015 at the rear of the main function hall to collect your product.
